The story of Tether
The design journey of Tether began with early explorations into formed plywood. While the initial intention was to create a solid, organic piece, we quickly realised the design needed a structural frame to provide stability and purpose. This led us to experiment with simpler, more transparent forms, moving towards a bent and more fluid expression that embraced openness and lightness.
We drew inspiration from the minimalist design language of the early modernists . Initial prototypes were created in both 10mm and 6mm welded steel wire; achieving a durable structure without unnecessary visual weight while incorporating gentle curves and bends to soften the overall silhouette.
We drew inspiration from the minimalist design language of the early modernists like Gerrit Rietveld. His principle of reducing furniture to its most essential elements, Teather embraces simple planes and linear forms to create a piece that is honest in both appearance and function.
The final chair achieves a sense of lightness and transparency through its open wire construction, allowing light to pass through and reducing visual clutter. Crafted from high-tensile steel and finished with a durable powder coat, it offers strength and durability suited to daily use, both indoors and outdoors. Subtle decorative touches, such as the laced back and seat supports and small woven details at key frame points, bring understated character to the design. By using efficient construction methods and honest materials, the Tether Chair delivers a refined, accessible, and timeless design.
Designed and made entirely in Melbourne, it celebrates the enduring appeal of simplicity, the strength of thoughtful design, and the beauty of skilled local craftsmanship.
