the story of karu

“karu started its life as a curly sketch from my wife - ‘make this for me’ she said.

We talked about how it should be a rolling ribbon that would keep objects - particularly hanging dog leads off the wall. It should also enable you to see different items at the same time.

Black and white illustration of a large classical-style theater with a stage, curtains, and a grand staircase leading to the entrance.
Outline sketch of a cymbal and drumstick with a dark background.
A black and white silhouette of a person standing next to a bike, with a tree and a building in the background.

karu is machine cut and then hand rolled. When considering the finish for karu, it needed to be a finish that could move and flex with the metal as different weighted objects flexed the body of the hook.

We have chosen an anodised finish as we did not trust that a powder coated finish would withstand the movement of the metal without cracking or flaking.

karu attaches to a wall via a small bracket which is screwed to the wall.

The metal ribbon slides down into the bracket and locks in place to conceal the screws.
